Much as with mealtimes, time for exercise is a common obstacle. With creativity and planning, you can overcome this obstable. Perhaps you have more time than you even realized. For example, the average American watches 4 hours of television each day. Add to that time you may spend surfling the Web or going on minor errands in the car, and there’s bound to be extra time for physical activity. In most cases, time really isn’t the issue, rather it’s a matter of priorities. To become more physically active, it may be that you need to give up another habit.
Your survivor guides -> If you can’t find 30 minutes during your day to exercise, look for 10-minutes windows. Exercising for 10 minutes three times a day is beneficial, too. Here are some strategies you might try.
- Walk for 10 minutes over your lunch hour, or get up a few minutes earlier in the morning and go for a short walk.
- Take the stairs instead of the elevator, at least for a few floors.
- Take regular activity breaks. Get up from your desk to stretch and walk around.
- Instead of always looking for the shortcut from one destination to another, look for opportunities to walk and get more physical activity in your day.
- Develop a routine that you can do at home. While watching your favorite television program or reading, walk on treadmill, ride a stationary bicyle or use an elliptical machine.
- Use the community pool to swim laps or do water workouts.
- Schedule time with a friend to do physical activities together on a regular basis.
- While your child is at soccer practice or taking piano lessons, go for a walk or jog.
